This “Qing Yongzheng Blue and White Wucai Dragon and Phoenix Bowl” is a classic work of the Qing Dynasty imperial kiln with strict specifications: 6.5 cm in height, 14.8 cm in diameter, and 6.2 cm in foot diameter. It has an open mouth, curved deep belly, and a neatly trimmed ring foot. The center of the bowl is painted with a blue and white pattern of a dragon playing with a pearl among clouds, with vigorous dragon claws; the outer mouth rim is decorated with eight auspicious patterns separated by ruyi patterns. The outer wall divides the picture with blue and white string patterns, depicting two dragons and two phoenixes flying opposite each other. The neck of the phoenix pattern is outlined in the unique linear style of the Yongzheng period without feathers, showing a simple and elegant style. The whole utensil implies “dragon and phoenix bringing auspiciousness”, which is a perfect integration of feudal imperial power and auspicious culture.

As the pinnacle representative of the blue and white wucai craftsmanship in the Yongzheng period, this product adopts the complex process of “underglaze blue and white + overglaze wucai”: first, the blue and white outline is fired at high temperature, then carefully filled with overglaze colors such as red, yellow, green, and purple, and finally fired twice at low temperature. Emperor Yongzheng had extremely high requirements for porcelain production, personally overseeing everything from shape, glaze color to patterns. This product has a white and lustrous glaze, rich and stable blue and white, bright but not gaudy wucai, and smooth lines with clear layers. It not only inherits the legacy of the Ming Dynasty but also integrates the delicate and elegant aesthetics of the current dynasty, achieving a perfect unity of craftsmanship and art. According to “Guochao Palace History”, such wucai dragon and phoenix bowls were exclusively used by the imperial harem, belonging to the strictly hierarchical court utensils, witnessing the life etiquette and aesthetic orientation of the Qing Dynasty royal family.

In the market circulation, the Yongzheng blue and white wucai dragon and phoenix bowls have always been rare treasures in the collection world. In the “Chenshang – Ming and Qing Imperial Porcelain Treasures” special auction of China Guardian’s 2024 Autumn Auction, a pair of similar Yongzheng wucai dragon and phoenix pattern bowls sold for RMB 6,727,500; in the 2016 Spring Auction of Beijing Kuangshi, a Yongzheng blue and white wucai dragon and phoenix bowl with a diameter of 14 cm sold for a high price of RMB 8,740,000. This product has the same shape and pattern as the similar utensils collected by the Nanjing Museum and the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Moreover, the number of surviving Yongzheng period pieces is rarer than that of other periods in the Qing Dynasty’s three great reigns, with the most exquisite painting. It has both cultural relic value and artistic value, and is a imperial porcelain treasure that senior collectors should not miss.
The bottom is inscribed with the blue and white six-character regular script mark “Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi” (Made in the Yongzheng Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty) in two lines. The brushwork is solemn and neat, and the blue and white pigment is appropriately light and dark, which is a typical feature of the Yongzheng imperial kiln mark. From the creation of the imperial porcelain official pattern in the Kangxi period to the promotion of it to the artistic peak in the Yongzheng period, this product is not only a piece of porcelain but also an important witness to the development history of the Qing Dynasty imperial kiln, carrying the essence of thousands of years of ceramic culture and the glory of royal art. Now appearing in the auction house, it is a rare opportunity. We sincerely invite collectors at home and abroad to appreciate this art treasure that embodies the porcelain-making craftsmanship and aesthetic pursuit of the Yongzheng period.
